2017 the year of the rooster

Well 2017 is upon us and we leave behind a very eventful 2016. The Chinese New year in 2017 is the year of the rooster. Chinese New Years Day is the first day of the Chinese lunar calendar and falls on Saturday 28th January.

Chinese New year is called Guo Nian. In ancient times there was a monster named Nian with a long head and sharp horns and lived deep in the sea and showed up on New Years Eve to eat prople and livestock. The people fled to the mountains, until one year an old man with white hair and a ruddy complexion arrived refusing to flee and successfully scared away the monster by pasting red paper on doors and burning bamboo to make a loud cracking sound, lighting candles in the houses and wearing red clothes. This tradition has been continued until the present time and has become an important way to celebrate the arival of the New year.
